JLA BOD Update

Monday April 04, 2022

Hello Jack Lakers!

I’m pleased to provide you with this update of your JLA Board activity. On Thursday, March 24th your JLA Board of Directors held its 6th Directors meeting.

Yes! It’s officially Spring!!! As Membership Director I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to gently remind anyone who has not yet renewed that Spring has historically been when memberships are renewed. As noted in my recent emails, memberships will be active for 12 months from payment date. If you pay early (prior to your renewal date) it will simply extend your membership 12 months from your renewal date. So don’t delay - - get your renewal in as we need your support!

Our third webinar "Turtle Talk” is coming up, Tuesday April 5th at 5:00 p.m. EDT, hosted by 2 junior lakers, 12 year olds Kennedy Mitchell and Zoe Sullivan, and Events Director Jonathan Mitchell. For kids, it should be fun!

Speaking of Events, we received fantastic input from our survey this past February. As expected, the regatta was the activity that received the most interest. However, two new suggestions came in second and third: music festivals and guided nature tours. Your JLA is working to make these two initiatives a reality. More detailed survey response info will be shared soon.

The Ice Out Competition is now closed. I hope you got your guess in! Who will win this year? Find out in the upcoming ever popular Smoke Signals newsmagazine! Smoke Signals is a member exclusive benefit…hint… another reminder…renew your membership or create a new one to receive your very own copy!  https://www.jackslakeassociation.ca/registration/

Environment Director Pat Phillips continues to work on the top two environment survey response priorities: preventing invasive species and quarry activities. Pat reports there will be no new logging this year and there continues to be meetings with the provincial government regarding the pesticide issue.

The Governance Committee has been working to establish positive relationships with the lake’s municipal partners and has drafted Codes of Conduct, Confidentiality and Conflict for Board Members and non-elected, at-large committee members.

An ad hoc committee, chaired by Pierre Bertrand, was created to review the Peterborough County 2022 Official Plan and potentially respond to issues/concerns that will impact Jack Lake.

Executive Treasurer Amanda Gray presented the Final 2022 Budget. I’m pleased to report that it was passed.

Safety Director Glen Painter presented updates for the lake safety map and other important safety items were discussed including the possibility of facilitating a CPR course.

Technology Director Andrew Semple continues to modernize all JLA platforms improving efficiency and user friendliness. The website continues to improve. Checked it out recently?

As Spring becomes Summer and more folks make their way back to the lake, please remember you may drop off any historical JLA records, documents, pictures, etc. with Debbie Hall at the Apsley Library. Our History/Archive/Education team will digitize these items to preserve them for future lakers. Originals can be returned to you.

Finally, yes, we are working on the summer issue of the JLA newsmagazine Smoke Signals and are delighted that the fantastic former editor Ashleigh Johnston will lead its production. You can enter your photos for the Smoke Signals 2022 Photo Contest at: photocontest@jackslakeassociation.ca

I look forward to seeing you soon at the lake!
