Laying the Groundwork for 2022!
As the new JLA Vice-President, I am happy to share the latest update on your new Board of Directors and our plans to lay the groundwork for a busy, productive and fun year in 2022.
The dominant theme emerging in all our work is communicate, communicate and then communicate some more! This means making sure we connect with members, other associations, groups with mandates that overlap with our work, as well as governments at all levels.
Proposed Priorities
At our most recent Board meeting on November 27, all directors laid out proposed priorities in each portfolio for the upcoming year. This is a way to scope our activities so that we focus efforts on the right initiatives and make sure we achieve maximum impact on behalf of members. Equally important is that we are sharing and discussing our priorities among all board members, which means we are actively communicating and understanding our goals as a team. It was encouraging to hear so much agreement in all directors’ priorities on the need for greater engagement of members, transparency and stronger communications.
For example, for the Environment Portfolio with Dr. David Lean and I as co-directors we laid out priorities in three main areas:
- Education and Awareness
- Partnerships and Knowledge sharing
- Management, Mitigation and Resolution of Issues, including invasive species, pesticides, logging, quarry explorations
Member Survey Coming Soon
The next stage in our development of priorities is to send a brief survey to all members. An ad hoc committee of the board is busy right now developing this survey so we can validate that the priorities developed by each director will hit the sweet spot for members. It will also give members the opportunity to tell us if we missed something.
History Presentation
As part of our meeting last weekend, we also enjoyed an informative presentation on the history of the lake from Erin Schroeder who published the book "Our Piece of Paradise, A History of Jack’s Lake”. It was helpful for all of us to have more historical context and perspectives on the lake and the history of JLA itself and we hope to hold a similar session for members.
