Sep 30 update on Special Meeting of JLA Members

On October 5th, JLA members are encouraged to participate in a special meeting of the membership called to vote on dissolving the JLA Board of Directors. This meeting is being called under bylaw 4.2 Special Meeting and bylaw 3.7 Other Nominations.

FOCA (Ontario Federation of Cottage Associations) has agreed to coordinate the meeting and the vote on behalf of the membership.

The proposed caretaker group has requested that the JLA Membership Director provide the membership list of names and contact information directly to FOCA for the purpose of organizing this, and any future meetings related to this process. FOCA has specific expertise in these types of meetings and regularly receives membership lists from cottage associations. They also hosted the JLA AGM last year.

At the meeting, members will be asked to vote on dissolving the current board as a whole, and if passed, to also vote to install us as caretakers to work with FOCA to coordinate the process of nominations and the election of a new JLA Board of Directors. As we mentioned previously, our only interest as caretakers is to support a transparent and respectful process that reflects the voices of members of the JLA.

Once the membership list has been provided to FOCA, you’ll receive an email from them inviting you to participate in an online meeting. In the meantime, we are posting this message in the Jack Lake Facebook group, the JLA Facebook group, and in the JLA website under announcements, to ensure that all members are aware of this important meeting. Please help us get the word out.

We do need 10% of the membership in attendance to form quorum. A vote to dissolve the board requires 60% of those in attendance at the meeting in favour (inclusive of proxies). As this vote will impact the JLA and direction of the lake for years to come, we hope that all members will make an attempt to attend this important vote. If you cannot attend the meeting and are a member, you can email any one of us a signed proxy with your instruction on how to vote (a proxy form will be posted on line).
