Survey on Enhanced Garbage Handling in HBM
Friday June 25, 2021
As you know, the Township of North Kawartha has pick-up garbage collection throughout the township, including at Jack Lake land properties on Mondays.
The Township of Havelock Belmont Methuen on the other hand has garbage pick-up to a select few inside the village of Havelock, and for the rest of the township provides four transfer stations - only one of which is anywhere near Jack Lake, on Shady Lane.
See www.hbmtwp.ca/en/living-here/garbage-recycling-and-waste.aspx
Even then, depending where you are on the lake, car and/or boat travel to the transfer station is up to 50km, takes up to an hour, and can cost over $20 in gas round-trip. Opening hours are two weekdays around noon (i.e. during the working day), or during prime enjoyment time Saturday 10am-2pm and Sunday 10am-5pm.
Does that work for you?
Are you stuffing wet odorous garbage into your car and trucking it hours to another jurisdiction even though you pay property tax here?
JLA has raised the issue again, and the Mayor of Havelock Belmont Methuen has now graciously re-opened the township survey regarding garbage collection.
This is an opportunity to click the link below and express your situation and needs.
Here are some options and considerations you might want to choose from:
a) Keep the transfer stations and timing as-is? This setup works for you.
b) Keep the transfer stations but move the hours into the evening one night a week? ... and/or move the hours into the evening on Sunday nights? Til what time?
c) Keep the transfer stations but enable drop-off even when they are un-staffed?
d) Add a transfer station at the top of McCoy Bay Rd to save a long drive over and down to Shady Lane? Staffed or un-staffed?
e) Start curbside garbage pickup like NK has? And somewhere for islands to place theirs too? Note, this might make you want to invest in raccoon-proof or bear-proof garbage cans or curbside bins.
Anyways, HBM is open to suggestions and making adjustments; make sure to let your tax dollars and voting rights have a hand in your Jack Lake experience!

The survey is focused on curbside garbage collection but you can write anything you want in the comment box. (Jack Lake is in old Methuen.)
