Tree Seedling Sales
Monday February 12, 2024
There has been a lot of interest lately in beginning to reforest the hardest hit areas of our beautiful Jack Lake after May 2022's derecho wind storm. Many lakers have spent considerable time, resources and effort to clean up the after effects of such devastation.
Now, the opportunity has arisen through three different providers to give you the opportunity to purchase a variety of native species - including evergreens, deciduous, and shrubs - It has been said that the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago and the next best time is now.
Please have a look at these three links and consider whether you'd like to begin to reforest your property with any of these options:
Bancroft Area Stewardship Council - Besides a selection of species (which come in bundles of 10 stems) such as white spruce, red pine, red oak, burr oak, white birch, white cedar, red maple, silver maple, high bush cranberry and red osier dogwood, BASC is offering 3 special bundles this year. Pick-up date is tentatively planned for Saturday, May 2, in Bancroft.
Otonobee Conservation - This year, Otonabee Conservation is pleased to offer over 45 native species of evergreen and broad leaf tree and shrub seedlings for purchase. The trees and shrubs are bare-root seedlings (which means they are not containers or plugs), are approximately 1-2 years old, and range in size from 6 to 30 inches. Contactless pick-up will be available at the end of April/early May in Peterborough.
Kawartha Conservation - Seedlings are 1 to 3 years old and bare root (which means they are not containers or plugs). Options are for evergreen, deciduous or shrub bundles. Seedlings are sold in bundles of 25 with prices varying with the different types of trees. Two pickup dates are Friday, April 26, and morning of Saturday, April 27, from Ken Reid Conservation Area located at 277 Kenrei Road in Lindsay.
We are fortunate, as Jack Lakers, to have these opportunities available to help replace our losses with many affordable, native options. Please consider coordinating with your neighbours to share a diverse variety of seedlings to help the Jack Lake ecosystem continue to grow and flourish.
